The nearest star to the Sun is Proxma Centuri C. It is 4.22 light years away. It is the smallest star in a triple system. It is 14,000 AU from the primary star of the system. Alpha Centuri A (primary) and B are the two other stars in the system both being slightly farther away than Proxma Centuri C at 4.4 light years. The separation between A and B is 24 AU. The distance of Proxma from the other stars and its point in orbit combine to make it closer to the earth. It will eventually be slightly farther away than the other two stars in the system as its orbit swings it to the other side of the sytem.

Alpha Centuri A is a G2 star Alpha Centuri B is a K0 star and Proxma Centuri C is an M star (M5.5) as are the majority of stars within 20 light years of the Sun.
